Meet Luna and Lucy

Updated: Feb 22, 2023

The origin story of how I met Luna and Lucy

Growing up I was pretty consistent with what I wanted - every year on my birthday, every dandelion I blew out, and every first evening star I spotted, I wished for the same thing every time. A puppy!

Plot Twist

I couldn't have pets in college, and then I moved to Thailand after graduating in 2019 so pets had to wait. Fast forward to 2020 when something known as covid cut my Thailand experience short and brought me back to my hometown. I soon found myself with a new job and in an apartment. Finally, I was at a point in my life where I could adopt pets. However, my apartment would only let me adopt cats. Well, I had little experience with cats but, I decided cats were as good a pet as any and started looking at shelters.

The Planets Align

Since I was living alone and working 8-5 at school, I was worried that one cat would be lonesome if it was just them. So I asked a shelter about adopting 2 cats instead of 1 and that is when they asked if I could adopt a pair of kittens named, "Thelma and Louise." I know, I was like what the heck kind of names are those? They sent me some pictures and said they had been found together outside. They could only estimate that their birthday was August 1st, 2020 but had no way of knowing for sure.

They explained that this pair was bonded to one another and they really wanted them to be adopted together. Unfortunately for them in those past few months, people had only been interested in Louise (later known as Lucy) because of her white markings. The shelter had been turning people down, waiting for someone who would adopt them together.

Well, there I was, not very picky at all, wanting nothing more but to help 2 animals find a home so that was perfect enough for me! I went to pick them up from their second foster family on November 11th, 2020 and that was when I met them for the first time.

Bringing them Home

You should have seen me with these babies - I had no idea how cats liked to be pet or held, which sound like basic concepts but they move their bodies differently than dogs do. All I knew was that I was determined to learn everything about how to be the best cat mom I could be.

Here they are together in the crate I drove them to my apartment in!

Name Origins

Of course I changed their names! Thelma became Luna, named after my Dungeons and Dragons characters' pet wolf. Louise became Lucy because I loved the Beatles song, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." It worked perfectly since before I had decided on getting two cats, I couldn't decide between those 2 names for the one potential cat I would adopt someday. So I guess for that reason, I needed 2 cats anyway. I liked the way Luna and Lucy sounded together and they both just seemed to fit those names anyway.

I Find Out What Cats are Really Like

Luna emerged as a snuggly angel lap cat, who has intelligent hunting instincts. She also is the alpha of the family, in a quiet and regal way. From her point of view, it is she that is taking care of all of us.

Lucy emerged as the crazy cat who has high energy and is looking around at what she can attempt to climb on or play with next. She does not think before acting and is thus always finding herself in hilarious predicaments. I often laugh when I remember that people wanted to adopt Lucy and not Luna...oh they had no idea what they would have been getting themselves into.

The two of them together are quite the pair, their bond has been clear to see since the beginning. They cuddle one another, play together, groom each other (well Luna usually grooms Lucy). And now, they travel together with us having adventures in the camper!
